In the fall of 2014, Sidestreams joined forces with a movement of community gardening in Newport, KY. The “Newport Community Gardens” were initiated by the Brighton Center and the Doug and Shelia Bray Foundation. Sidestreams collaborates with the project by supplying resources, tools, plants, plans, staff and volunteers.
The nearest supermarket for the residents of Newport’s West side is a 25 minute walk, making it difficult to access fresh vegetables for a daily diet. The Newport team believes all families and communities deserve to have access to healthy and affordable food.
The project has two goals:
- Increase access to fresh vegetables for the residents of the West side of Newport
- Increase knowledge of ways to grow, harvest, and cook the vegetables so everyone can enjoy a healthier diet.
Sidestreams helps support this mission by providing staffing, seeds, and plants to the gardens in the network; the Ann St. Community Garden, St.Paul’s, Holy Spirit, the Campbell County Detention Center production garden and others.
